History:

Nathaniel was born in approximately 9:00 Dragon, the eldest son of the Arl of Amaranthine. Poised to inherit his father's position, Nathaniel was squired to another nobleman when he was about 20, where he was trained as a fighter and rogue. After his father was murdered/executed, he returned to his homeland to get revenge on the person who had killed him. Rather than get revenge he was conscripted into an order called the Grey Wardens, and his life has become devoted to killing darkspawn, evil creatures that come from deep below ground and wreak havoc on the world every few hundred years. A few years after he became a Grey Warden, he was sent by the order's leader to investigate some strange goings-on in Kirkwall. His timing was such that when the civil war between mages and templars broke out he was still in the city.

CRAU info: Nathaniel spent approximately one year in the game Exsilium. The setting was a post-apolocyptic-type dystopia, set on earth approximately 1000 years in the future. Nathaniel found himself in a city that was periodically attacked by near-invincible enemies. At one point they attacked the city and put microchips into their victims' backs, presumably to be able to track their movements. Nathaniel still has this chip, though it's now useless. Nathaniel took up arms with his fellow inhabitants who had all been sent there against their will and traveled through various times in earth's history to fight the enemy by changing historic events (some major and some minor--Nathaniel helped influence the druids who built Stonehenge). He and a fellow transport also traveled across the sea into enemy territory to gather intel on them. He wound up coming back with a vial of some sort of drug that was used to turn people into mindless, obedient beings.

Then an internal civil war broke out, with the transports fighting against the group of people that had brought them there. Nathaniel took the side of the bosses, believing that they truly needed the transports' help and that he had to do everything he could to defeat the enemy. Not long after he disappeared. He will have no memory of what might have occurred between the time he left Exsilium and arrived here, and won't remember how he even managed to leave Exsilium.

While in Exsilium, Nathaniel was reunited with an old friend, Anders, and they began a romantic relationship which lasted for well over a year--until Nathaniel's disappearance.

Personality:

Nathaniel is a very proud man, who values nobility and courage. He can come across to others as being stiff and cold, but he is actually very caring and passionate about his beliefs. He is reserved and quiet, and known to have a biting sense of humor. He is loyal to anyone he considers a friend, will always fight on the side of good, and believes fervently in honor. He has a major chip on his shoulder about his father, who was a very, very nasty man who tortured and murdered countless people almost solely to gain power and prestige. Nathaniel feels that he has to make up for his father's sins, and restore his family's name to the greatness that it once had. He is extremely sensitive to insults about his family. He can be sarcastic and has a dry humor, and can be very quick to anger. He has a short temper, and can be quite cutting at times, though usually he's able to control his anger.

Abilities: Trained in the standard rpg rogue-class. His primary weapon of choice is a bow, and he's also very proficient at dual-wielding daggers. He can make traps, pick locks and brew poisons. Often uses stealth, which causes him to seemingly "disappear" allowing him to get surprise attacks in on his enemies.

He has both the assassin and bard specializations. With the assassination specialization he's able to target enemies, identifying their weaknesses and causing extra damage, exploit their weak points, and cause bleeding wounds when backstabbing. As a bard, he's able to sing (badly and very off-key) on the battlefield; specific songs can raise a party's valor, give them courage, distract enemies, or stun enemies.

Inventory: Set of medium leather armor, longbow with his family's crest on it and quiver of arrows, set of two well-crafted but fairly nondescript daggers, set of locksmith's tools.

Is this character a duplicate ?: No
Can this character potentially fill the "canon spot?": Don't think so.
Briefly explain how this character differs from their canon counterpart (and other versions currently in game:) Nathaniel isn't a whole lot different from how he is in canon. The main way that he's changed is that since I'm taking him from the end of Dragon Age II, he's approximately 7 years older (and probably a little more mature) than he is in Awakening. He had a cameo in DA2 which is why I'm taking him from that point, but his cameo wasn't really in-depth enough to show how much he may have changed, other than that he seems a bit friendlier and less confrontational. He's aware of what happened at the end of Dragon Age II, which is different from his canon-counterpart, he's slightly more open and relaxed about things, he became romantically involved with Anders, another character from Dragon Age, while he was in Exsilium.

[OOC]

Backtagging: Absolutely!
Threadhopping: Since I've been doing so much of this myself lately, I'm gonna go ahead and say yes.
Fourthwalling: No.
Offensive subjects: Kind of hard to put any specifics here. Basically, if I feel uncomfortable with the way a thread is going, I will try to let you know one way or another. I do prefer to try and manipulate the thread to get it back on a more comfortable track, rather than just abandoning it completely, if at all possible.

[IC]

Hugging this character: Sure, but Nathaniel might get a little uncomfortable.
Kissing this character: Same as above; Nathaniel's not a very touchy-feely kind of person, especially in public, so he may get a bit awkward about it. (Does not apply to mages, Nathaniel has no problem ravishing mages either publicly, or privately).
Flirting with this character: Definitely yes
Fighting with this character: Verbal sparring: totally fine, no heads-up required. Physical fighting: 99% of the time I'll be all for it, just give me a heads-up in advance because there might be a situation where it wouldn't work.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Same as physical fighting -- check first for the all-clear, but I'm completely open to the possibility of causing severe injuries.
Killing this character: Same as fighting with/injuring. I'll definitely consider the possibility if there's a good IC reason for it.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Go for it, though he'll likely get upset if he finds out you're doing it (which is a perfectly good reason for your character to go ahead and do it.)

Warnings: None, really. I'm generally up for anything rp-wise, up to and including smut. But I prefer to have a good amount of CR built up before I'm comfortable going that far.

A good rule of thumb: If you're in doubt about anything, feel free to ask!

Character NAME: Nathaniel Howe
Canon & MEDIUM: Dragon Age: Origins (Video game)
Canon PULL-POINT: Post Dragon Age 2 {Note: While Nathaniel Howe is primarily from Dragon Age: Origins Awakening (Awakening is an expansion pack to the original Dragon Age: Origins game), he has a small cameo in Dragon Age 2. Because of the fact that Anders ([personal profile] violentgazebo)is already at Exsilium, and that his personality is so vastly different between the two games, I’ve decided to take Nathaniel from after Dragon Age 2 to make our interactions with each other less complicated.}
Character AGE: 37-ish.
Character ABILITIES: Nathaniel has no magical abilities, but he is your traditional RPG rogue. In addition to being proficient with various weapons such as daggers, swords, and bows, he is also skilled in tracking and hunting, as well as poison-making and lockpicking.

There are several different schools of specialization for rogues in the game. The three I’ve chosen for Nathaniel are:
Assassin
Bard
Duelist

He’s also proficient in the Archery tree

»Character HISTORY: Nathaniel’s official background.

The Howes had ruled the arling of Amaranthine for centuries, and were a well-respected family. They were considered loyal to the Crown, and when Orlais invaded Ferelden and successfully claimed Ferelden for their Empress, Byron Howe – Nathaniel’s grandfather – fought in the war to help restore Ferelden’s rightful king to his throne and rid the country of their enemy.

When The Fifth Blight occurred, Nathaniel’s father Rendon Howe used the ensuing chaos and discord to gain more power for himself. By his orders, the entire Cousland family (rulers of nearby Highever) was slaughtered. When Teyrn Loghain betrayed King Cailan at The Battle of Ostagar, Rendon threw his lot in with him. Rendon committed many horrendous deeds during the Blight, including selling elves into slavery and hiring an assassin to deal with the last two surviving Grey Wardens (an order dedicated to ending the Blight). He was eventually defeated by the Warden (the game’s PC), shortly before the Blight was ended.

Nathaniel was away from Ferelden during the Blight, having been squired out to the Free Marches. When he returned, it was to hear that his father had been executed by the Warden, and that the Warden had taken up the position of Arl of Amaranthine. Nathaniel immediately set off for his family home, intent on getting revenge. Once he arrived, though, he realized he couldn’t bring himself to kill the Warden, and instead attempted to reclaim some of his family’s belongings. It was then that he was captured and imprisoned until the Warden arrived to take up their new duties.

In the game, you actually are given a choice between executing Nathaniel for the crime of theft, or recruiting him into the Grey Wardens. I’m obviously going with the latter option. Throughout the game, Nathaniel accompanies the Warden on various quests (he’s one of several party members that you can choose to take with you when completing quests), and by the end of the game is able to reclaim some of his family’s honor through his deeds.

»Character PERSONALITY: Nathaniel is thoughtful and steadfast. Careful to always remain in control of himself, he keeps his emotions and feelings to himself as much as possible. But that doesn’t mean he lacks emotion, quite the contrary: Nathaniel’s emotions run deep. He loves passionately, angers quickly and fiercely. It is his strong emotions that cause him to keep himself in check.

Though it is only hinted at in game, Nathaniel’s relationship with his father was very volatile, mainly because he proved to be such a disapointment to Rendon. As the eldest son – and subsequent heir – Nathaniel was likely under a great deal of pressure to be like his father. Since Rendon was clearly ruthless, power-hungry, and despised people who were weaker than him, it’s easy to conclude that he would be less than happy with Nathaniel, who proves to be quite compassionate towards others, as well as respectful and caring. As Nathaniel himself says, “My father often forgot that nobility has another meaning,” indicating that Nathaniel didn’t approve of his father either, despite the fact that he has a hard time accepting what his father did during the Blight.

Nathaniel is wary of trusting others at first. He keeps them at a distance, assessing them for any possible threat or ill intentions. Once he does become close to someone, though, he is very loyal. Though he has no desire to become a Grey Warden at first, he eventually takes pride in being one, and devotes himself to upholding the honor of the Wardens, as well as restoring honor to his family’s name. Honor and nobility are two things that are extremely important to Nathaniel.

» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: Nathaniel will be bringing his own weapon from game canon: The Howe Bow. This longbow belonged to his grandfather, who fought in the war against Orlais approximately twenty years ago. Nathaniel had an enormous amount of respect for his grandfather (almost to the point of reverence), and was extremely pleased when he receives the bow as a gift from the Warden. With such a strong sentimental attachment to the bow, I can’t imagine Nathaniel giving it up for any other primary weapon.
Chosen SKILLSET: Nathaniel is definitely a fighter, and would be interested in helping out combat-wise in any ways necessary; he functions best when he has some sort of purpose.

» ADDITIONAL NOTES
I’m being a bit vague re: Nathaniel’s pull-point kind of on purpose. Anders’ mun and I are currently working out the details of how best to work things as far as when they’d last seen each other in their world. This is due to the fact that some Very Bad Things happened at the end of Dragon Age 2 involving Anders, and we’ve decided it would be best for the two of them to address this “off-screen,” so to speak, rather than dealing with it in Exsilium. In general terms, it will be a few months after Dragon Age 2 ends.
